North American NA-73 Mustang Mk. I, RAF (Serial No. AL958) being test-flown at Inglewood, California, in October 1942. This plane was one of the original batch of 300 aircraft ordered by the Royal Air Force in Dec 1940 before the lend-lease act. Note that the fighter wears U.S. national insignias that were used by U.S. forces up to April 1942.

North American NA-91 Mustang fighters being serviced at North American Aviation at Inglewood, California, in October 1942.  After passing of the lend-lease act in March 1941, the USAAF ordered 150 NA-93 Mustang Mk. IA fighters on 25 Sep 1941 for delivery to the United Kingdom.  The RAF serial numbers assigned were FD418-FD567 (FD553 is visible on the left).  For contractual purposes, these aircraft were assigned the U.S. designation of P-51, USAAF (Serial Nos. 41-37320 to 41-37469).   The Mustang Mk. IA differed from earlier versions in having the machine guns replaced by four 20-mm wing-mounted Hispano cannon.  After Dec 1941, (Serial Nos. FD418-FD437, FD450-FD464, FD466-FD469, and FD510-FD527) were reposessed by the USAAF (and briefly named A-36A Apache)

North American F-51 Mustang flown by a NACA research pilot, running up the engine of his aircraft on the taxiway adjacent to Rogers Dry Lake at the NACA High-Speed Flight Station in 1955.  A P-51 Mustang, redesignated an F-51 Mustang, was transferred from the Langley Aeronautical Laboratory to the NACA High-Speed Flight Research Station (now the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center) at Edwards Air Force Base in California, in 1950.  The P-51 Mustang was the first aircraft to employ the NACA laminar-flow airfoil design and could dive to around Mach number 0.8.  As an F-51, it was used as a proficiency aircraft at the High Speed Flight Station.  The NACA was the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, a predecessor of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).  The HSFRS was a predecessor of NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, and Langley Aeronautical Laboratory became NASA's Langley Research Center.  Records show that the aircraft was also used as a chase and support aircraft 395 times.  Neil Armstrong was among the pilots using it to chase some of the X-planes.  This aircraft was retired in 1959 as the result of a taxiing mishap.

During the twentieth century, civil and military aviation has played a prominent role in the history and development of California. Commercial operators have exploited the advantages offered by aircraft to overcome its unique challenges of geography and climate. This is an aviation handbook designed to be used as a quick reference to the classic military heritage aircraft that have been restored and preserved in the state of California.  The aircraft include those flown by members of the US Air Force, the US Navy, the US Army, the US Marine Corps, the US Coast Guard, the Air and Army National Guard units, and by various NATO and allied nations as well as a number of aircraft previously operated by opposition forces in peace and war.

The interested reader will find useful information and a few technical details on most of the military aircraft that have been in service with active flying squadrons both at home and overseas.  150 selected photographs have been included to illustrate a few of the major examples in addition to the serial numbers assigned to American military aircraft.  For those who would like to actually see the aircraft concerned, aviation museum locations, addresses and contact phone numbers, websites and email addresses have been included, along with a list of aircraft held in each museum’s current inventory or that are on display as gate guardians throughout the state of California.  The aircraft presented in this edition are listed alphabetically by manufacturer, number and type.

Although many of California’s heritage warplanes have completely disappeared, a few have been carefully collected, restored and preserved, and a good number of these have been restored to flying condition.  This guide-book should help you to find and view California’s Warplane survivors (publication date April 2012).

The historic legacy of the Alameda Naval Air Station is preserved at the Alameda Naval Air Museum located in the former Air Terminal Building No. 77 at Alameda Point.  The museum features archival materials, photographs and stories of the war workers of the Second World War up to the eventual closing of the base in 1997.  The museum is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

No. N3703G.  This B-17G owned by David Tallichet.  It was a former firebomber converted into a B-17F configuration by installing a Sperry top turret, early-style tail gunner’s compartment and waist gunner’s positions, and omitting the chin turret.  It subsequently appeared in the 1990 fictionalized version of the Memphis Belle story, and continues to make air show appearances in that guise.  N3703G currently operates out of Geneseo, New York.

The Portal of the Folded Wings Shrine to Aviation is a 75-foot-tall (23 m) structure of marble, mosaic, and sculpted figures and is the burial site for fifteen pioneers of aviation.  It was built in 1924 as the entrance to Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery.  Aviation enthusiast James Gillette was impressed by the rotunda's close proximity to the airport and Lockheed Aircraft Company.  He conceived a plan to use the structure as a shrine to aviation and worked to that end for two decades.  It was dedicated in 1953 by aviation enthusiasts who wanted a final resting place for pilots, mechanics, and other pioneers of flight.  10621 Victory Blvd.

Hemet, Ryan Air Attack Base Fire Station, 4710 West Stetson Ave, 92545.  (530) 477-0641.  Ryan Air Attack is a joint Air Attack/Helitack base operated by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Riverside Unit).  It is one of 19 tanker bases strategically located throughout California.  The base provides initial attack aircraft service to over 17,000 square miles (44,000 km2) of private, state, and federally owned lands.  CAL Fire operates 48 classic warbirds as part of its statewide firefighting program. The Aviation Department operates (23) S-2T 1200 gallon "First Responder" Tracker tankers, (11) UH-1H Huey Helicopters and (14) OV-10 Broncos. One of each of the fixed wing aircraft are kept as a spare for trading out for maintenance during the fire season and two of the Hueys are kept back for the same reason.

Douglas D-558-II Skyrocket No. 3 (BuNo. 37975), mounted on a pylon at the intersection of Avenue K and 30th Street West.  This was the third of the three ‘558 Stage 2’ Skyrockets built and was the only one to be fitted with both rocket and jet engines together.  Although allocated Navy Bu numbers, they were operated by NACA from Muroc Dry Lake (now Edwards AFB).  Between September 1951 and mid-1953, ‘145’ was flown by Scott Crossfield and Walter Jones to investigate ‘Pitch-up’.  In November 1953, Scott Crossfield broke the Mach 2 barrier in sister aircraft ‘NACA 143’.  From 1954, ‘145’ was used to test the effect of external stores on the aircrafts transonic behavior.  This was completed in 1956 and the aircraft retired, having completed a total of 87 flights.

All of the aircraft have been carefully restored for public display. Operating hours of the airparks are the same - Friday through Sunday (except in inclement weather) from 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Pacific Time. On Federal Government holidays both airparks are closed. The two airparks are located at Avenue P and 25th Street East near Site 9.

McDonnell-Douglas F-18 Hornet (BuNo. 161213), NASA 844, was destroyed in crash in 1988, (its tail number was reassigned to a Lockheed SR-71A Blackbird).

McDonnell-Douglas X-36 Tailless Agility Fighter Research Aircraft No. 1 was transferred to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at Wright Patterson AFB, July 2003.

McDonnell-Douglas X-36 Tailless Agility Fighter Research Aircraft No. 2 was transferred to AFFTC Museum, Edwards AFB.

Orbital Sciences X-34 A-1A and A-2 Reusable Launch Vehicle technical demonstrators were transferred to the Air Force Flight Test Center, Edwards Air Force Base, for possible airframe testing.

Four Lockheed D-21 reconnaissance drones were loaned to the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center in June 1994.  Dryden loaned one D-21 to the Blackbird Airpark in Palmdale of which ownership was later transferred back to the Air Force.  In 2006 ownership of the remaining three D-21’s was transferred back to the Air Force.  One D-21 was loaned by the USAF to the March ARB Museum and the other two were returned to storage at Davis-Monthan AFB in Arizona.  Prior to returning the drones to the USAF, NASA was requested to remove the engines from the three remaining airframes.  The engines contained a trace amount of magnesium-thorium which is considered a radioactive substance by museum standards so any drone going to a civilian museum had to be without an engine.  NASA mechanics volunteered their weekend time to remove the engines and those were shipped separately to Wright-Patterson AFB to be destroyed.  (Tony Landis, 6-12-08).

Glenn Curtiss, recognized as the “Father of Naval Aviation” arranged for an aircraft carrier to be built according to his specifications from an existing US Navy ship in San Francisco harbor.  On 18 January 1911, Eugene Ely successfully flew a Curtiss D-IV "Pusher" both off and onto the deck of the USS Pennsylvania. (Ely performed the first take off from an aircraft carrier in 1910 in the East, but did not execute the landing at the time).  The Navy was not impressed and didn't see an immediate future for the aircraft carrier, but encouraged Curtiss to build a sea plane which could be used for reconnaissance on a battleship.  By 26 January 1911, Curtiss successfully demonstrated the first practical sea plane in San Diego Harbor by flying it next to a battleship and having it raised onto the deck and down to the water again.  The first naval aviation school had already been established by Curtiss as early as 23 December 1910 on North Island, San Diego using Curtiss’s airplanes.  By February 1911, the first amphibious landing of an airplane was performed at Coronado Island at the Del Coronado Hotel.  Navy Lt. Ellyson completed his training and became the first Navy flyer (Naval Aviator No. 1) on 11 April 1911.  On 8 May 1911, the Navy purchased two Curtiss airplanes and one Wright Flyer and the Navy Aviation School, the first in the country, was well on its way on North Island San Diego: the birth of U.S. Naval Aviation; all due to Glenn Curtiss.

Yak-3, previously on display at the Museum of Flying in Santa Monica.  It was the machine flown by Hero of the Soviet Union Lt.General Yeremin and was part of the Central Russian AF museum at Monino, although it was loaned out to the Yakolev museum at some point.  It moved to the United States in 1991 but when the Santa Monica museum closed in 2005 the aeroplane moved to the CAF at Camarillo.  It remained on display there until at least 2012.  It is on display at the Vadim Zadorozhny Technical Museum, Arkhangelskoye, Moscow Oblast, Russia, as of 26 Aug 2017

There are several recreations of historic aircraft, ships, and a German Railroad cannon.  The Museum has a database of over 11,600 names of staff and cadets who were at Minter Field, including many pictures in class books.  There is also a DVD library with over 1000 hours of military and aviation videos, catalogued by subject and names.

California Warplanes

This is an aviation handbook designed to be used as a quick reference to the classic military heritage aircraft that have been restored and preserved in the state of California.  The aircraft include those flown by members of the US Air Force, the US Navy, the US Army, the US Marine Corps, the US Coast Guard, the Air and Army National Guard units, and by various NATO and allied nations as well as a number of aircraft previously operated by opposition forces in peace and war.

The interested reader will find useful information and a few technical details on most of the military aircraft that have been in service with active flying squadrons both at home and overseas.  150 selected photographs have been included to illustrate a few of the major examples in addition to the serial numbers assigned to American military aircraft.  For those who would like to actually see the aircraft concerned, aviation museum locations, addresses and contact phone numbers, websites and email addresses have been included, along with a list of aircraft held in each museum’s current inventory or that are on display as gate guardians throughout the state of California.  The aircraft presented in this edition are listed alphabetically by manufacturer, number and type.
