The museum is presently housed in the old base commissary located in the middle of Travis Air Force Base.  A new museum to be built off-base is in the works.  The Travis Air Museum is one of the Largest Collections of Military Aircraft on the West Coast.  Located an hour from San Francisco or Sacramento, the Travis Air Museum has 35 aircraft on display, assorted exhibits on military aviation, a gift shop, and picnic area. To get to the museum take the Interstate 80 to Airbase Parkway exit.  Follow the Parkway east to the main gate of Travis Air Force Base.   The Museum of Military Aviation History has a representative collection of American military aircraft from various periods: fighters, bombers, trainers, cargo and liaison aircraft.  Its exhibits showcase Jimmy Doolittle and the Tokyo Raiders, the 15th Air Force in the Second World War, the Tuskegee Airmen, the Berlin Airlift, the history of Travis Air Force Base with special emphasis on the Korean war, the war in Vietnam and other significant military missions.  Those who do not have a US Government ID should call the Visitors’ Center at the main gate (707) 424-1462, or the museum to check on current security conditions for entry.

Douglas C-124C Globemaster II (Serial No. 52-1000), c/n 43909.  The museum was given the C-124 in August 1982. The aircraft had been stored for many years outside at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland where it was used as a storage shed. Transporting the aircraft by ground to California would have been prohibitively expensive so the decision was made to fly the aircraft to the museum. Volunteers joined with members of the Georgia Air National Guard's 116th Tactical Fighter Wing from Dobbins Air Force Base to restore the C-124 to an airworthy and ferryable condition.  The aircraft was then ferried from Aberdeen to Dobbins AFB in Georgia where members of the 116 TFW completed the aircraft's restoration.  The aircraft was then flown cross country to Norton Air Force Base in California. After a photo session over the Golden Gate Bridge the C-124 arrived at the Jimmy Doolittle Air & Space Museum at exactly 1400 on 10 June 1984.  This was the first recorded flight of a C-124 in nearly a decade.
