South Carolina National Guard, along with North Carolina and Georgia National Guard units conducted “Carolina Thunder 14”,  a drill weekend, joint training exercise Nov. 15, 2014. More than 30 aircraft participated in the mass take-off from McEntire Joint National Guard Base, Eastover, S.C. Units conducted air and ground operations at the Savannah River Site in Allendale, S.C. The S.C. Air National Guard 169th Fighter Wing’s F-16 Fighting Falcons joined AH-64D Apaches, CH-47 Chinooks, UH-60 Black Hawks and more than 100 Infantry Soldiers from the S.C. Army National Guard to train with Apaches from the N.C. Army National Guard and the Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (JSATRS) and Joint Terminal Training Center (JTAC) from the Georgia Air National Guard in a collective force-on-force, enemy suppression and assault mission.

Douglas/On Mark B-26K Invader of the 609th Special Operations Squadron in flight over South-East Asia, sometime between 1967 and 1969.  The B-26K (Serial No. 64-17671), ex-A-26C (Serial No. 44-35820) was rebuilt by On Mark as a B-26K and arrived in South-East Asia in June 1966.  It was retired to the MASDC on 10 November 1969. The aircraft was later displayed in the Florence Air & Missile Museum, South Carolina.  When the museum closed in 1997, 64-17671 was scrapped for spare parts.

North American F-86H Sabre (Serial No. 52-1976), FU-976, mounted on three iron posts in Cleveland Park.

This memorial is dedicated to Major Rudolf Anderson Jr., a pilot and commissioned officer in the USAF and the first recipient of the Air Force Cross, the USAF's second-highest award for heroism.  He was the only person killed by enemy fire during the Cuban Missile Crisis.  On 27 Oct 1962, while serving with the 4080th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, Major Anderson took off in a U-2F (Serial Number 56-6676, former CIA Article 343) from a forward operating location at McCoy AFB in Orland, Florida.  A few hours into his mission, he was shot down by a Soviet-supplied S-75 Dvina (NATO designation SA-2 Guidline) surface-to-air missile, near Banes, Cuba.

The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-10) during the Marcus Island raid on 31 August 1943: Lt. Comdr. James H. "Jimmy" Flatley,Commander of Air Group 5 (CAG-5), sits in his Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat (code "00"), painted in a tricolor-scheme (certainly an "in the field" application) before takeoff. An Aviation Boatswain Mate stands ready to remove chock from wheels. A non-specular insignia white diagonal stripe on the tail and the green propeller hub signified CAG-5 aboard the Yorktown.

McDonnell RF-101C Voodoo (Serial No. 56-0172) of the 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina.  This aircraft was assigned to the 45th TRS, 460th TRW, and shot down by gunfire on 2 April 1966 over North Vietnam.  The pilot, Captain Daniel James Doughty, USAF, became a prisoner of war.
